Kenya Day on April 11th was an overwhelming success! For 27 years, Elmwood School has been celebrating our relationship with elite Kenyan runners by introducing our students to the most talented athletes in the world! We had 13 elite Kenyan runners visit our students including 8 men and 5 women. As a matter of fact, the winner of the 2019 Boston Marathon, Lawrence Cherono, was at our school just days before his near photo finish! The 2nd place women’s finisher, Edna Kiplagat, was also present. Even more amazing is that 10 out of the 13 Kenyan runners we hosted at Elmwood School placed in the Top 10 in their division.
For over one month, our students at Elmwood School used this opportunity as a learning experience about Kenyan culture through art, song, dance, geography and language! See below for photos and videos of our children expressing their amazing talents. Plus, through the contributions of many families, Elmwood raised over $3628.11 to support the Kenyan Kids Foundation which was generously matched by John Hancock, our event sponsor. John Hancock also donated a commemorative 2019 Boston Marathon banner to our school which was signed by all 13 elite Kenyan runners!
Here are some key highlights and video:
• Total donation to Kenyan Kids Foundation (including John Hancock match) was $7256.22

• The winner of the men’s 2019 Boston Marathon was Kenyan, Lawrence Cherono, who was at our school just days before his near photo finish. (insert video)

• Our men’s Kenyan runners who visited Elmwood School placed 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 9th and 10th overall! (that is 7 out of 8 Kenyan men visitors who finished in the top 10)!
• 3 out of the 5 Kenyan women who visited Elmwood finished in the top 10 including Edna Kiplagat who took an impressive 2nd place at the 2019 Boston Marathon.

• Our children learned the Kenyan National anthem in both the Kenyan and the English language!

• Mr. Keane’s class performed Kenyan dance and song at the rally.
